Leveraging Postmortem Analysis:

A Case Study of E-commerce Checkout Disruption

Published
•3 min read•View as Markdown

A Postmortem analysis is a detailed examination of past event, typically a failure or negative outcome with the goal of understanding the root cause, identifying areas for improvement and preventing similar issues from happening in the future.

in the world of System Administration and DeVops/SRE this is very essential in providing insight to what measures can be taken after a software bugs, system outages, or security breaches. By analyzing the event in detail, teams can learn from their mistakes, identify weaknesses in their processes or systems, and implement corrective measures to enhance reliability and performance.

Postmortem: E-commerce Checkout Slowdown (1 hour outage)

Issue Summary:

On Thursday, August 22nd, 2024, between 1:15 PM and 2:15 PM, our e-commerce website experienced a checkout slowdown. This resulted in a significantly increased page load time for the checkout process, impacting approximately 20% of users attempting to complete purchases.

Timeline:

  • 1:10 PM: Monitoring alerts triggered, indicating a sudden spike in response time for the payment processing API.

  • 1:12: An engineer on duty investigates the alert and identifies slow response times originating from the payment gateway provider.

  • 1:15 PM: Initial troubleshooting begins, focusing on internal infrastructure components that interact with the payment gateway. (Misleading Path)

  • 1:30 PM : The engineering team determines that the issue isn't related to internal systems. Contact is established with the payment gateway provider's support team.

  • 1:45 PM: The payment gateway provider confirms they are experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple clients.

  • 2:00 PM: The payment gateway provider reports progress in resolving the issue.

  • 2:10 PM: Checkout functionality returns to normal operation.

Root Cause and Resolution:

The root cause of the slowdown was a service disruption on the payment gateway provider's end. This disruption caused increased response times for their API, which in turn, impacted the checkout process on our website. The issue was resolved by the payment gateway provider, and their service returned to normal operation by 2:10 PM PST.

Corrective and Preventative Measures:

  • Improved Monitoring: We will implement additional monitoring checks that directly monitor the health of the payment gateway provider's API. This will allow for faster detection of external service disruptions.

  • Diversification: Explore integrating a secondary payment processing solution to provide redundancy in case of future outages with the primary provider.

  • Communication Protocol: Establish a clearer communication protocol with the payment gateway provider for faster issue identification and resolution during future disruptions.

Lessons Learned:

This incident highlights the importance of proactively monitoring external dependencies and having contingency plans in place for service disruptions beyond our control. By implementing the corrective measures outlined above, we can minimize the impact of future outages on our users' experience.

This postmortem analysis article serves as an example on debugging a software bugs or any other outage that Devops/SRE might experience, thanks for engaging me.
